March 2009 | The three P's – Porsche, Palermo, Panamera

Since the joint charter office of Eurowings and Lufthansa CityLine also has had access to the Fokker 100 of Contact Air, many additional opportunities open up in the AD-HOC charter business: At long last, the charter team has a plane which is available every day, every hour and in every week. This enabled the charter office last year to bid for a car presentation, for which, in November 2008, it was awarded the order by Porsche to present the press program from Munich and from Stuttgart in and to Palermo.

The fact that the charter office offered a full service package was probably an added advantage, for example, connecting flights from all Lufthansa stations in Germany were part of the package. The advantage of this was that passengers were spared the trouble of walking long distances at the airport to get to their charter plane because the arriving scheduled flights and the outgoing charter flight were cleared at the same terminal.

The first Fokker 100 flight took off from Munich on January 16, 2009 – and it all started with freezing fog, which is not unusual at that time of year. The connecting flights from Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Hamburg arrived Munich with a delay. Thanks to the excellent assistance by Gabi Wüst and her colleagues from the Lufthansa station in Munich and the chief of traffic at the airport, the total delay was only 01:20 hours – an outstanding achievement considering the weather.

After the first day had been completed and the press briefing organizers hoped for the weather to improve they were in for another disappointment: More snow in Munich; Munich airport had to be closed for several hours because of snow on two days. There was a storm over Sicily and - almost ridiculous – ordinary fog caused more delay. However, the chief of traffic in Munich made it possible that passengers whose feeder flights actually had arrived too late for them to go through the normal check-in procedure, were directly picked up at their scheduled planes and taken to the charter plane.

At the same time, Nicola De Paola of Lufthansa Rome, who acted as „Godfather for Palermo“, helped the team cope with the difficulties so that passengers leaving Palermo did not face much delay of their return flights. The whole program went on until February 3, 2009 and most flights were by the Fokker 100 of Contact Air. On January 22, Lufthansa CityLine served the relation with a CRJ 700, on January 24, Eurowings provided the service of a CRJ 200, and on January 26, OLT took care of the Palermo program with a Fokker 100.

On completion of the program, the charter office thanked all who had contributed: Despite the adverse conditions, the outstanding teamwork made a very good impression on Porsche. By the way, the Panamera, a 4-door family saloon, which will be available in fall 2009, was presented in Palermo.
